Startup Sequence Management

Have you ever wondered how to disable all those applications that automatically start themselves immediately after your operating system boots up? You can improve your computer performance considerably by telling your operating system not to run anything you do not really need at startup.

Third party applications that are unnecessarily running on a computer can consume a decent amount of it's resources.

Optimizing your system startup sequence is a guaranteed way to free up RAM memory, decrease the processor load and make your computer run faster. Even if you disable an application by mistake, the process is completely reversible.

You can configure the operating system startup sequence in a couple of different ways. By using an external application designed solely for this purpose, by installing a performance optimizing utility, or simply by accessing your System Configuration Utility and disabling them from there.

System Configuration Utility

To access the System Configuration Utility in Windows XP, click on your Start menu and then Run. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can access the Run dialog by typing Run into the search field and pressing enter.

Windows XP Run Window

Type msconfig into the box and hit enter (or click OK). The System Configuration Utility window will show up. Click on the Startup tab and simply uncheck anything you do not need.

Restart the computer and see the difference. Your operating system will definitely boot up and shut down faster.

Also, the computer will now have more memory to work with meaning that it will be less likely to slow down or freeze up. Depending on how many applications you will disable, performance gain might be more or less noticeable.

Do not worry about disabling anything that you might use but not immediately after system startup. Disabling applications from running automatically on startup does not mean that you are uninstalling them. They are still there, but just not activated automatically. You can bring them back to automatic startup by simply repeating the process and instead of leaving them unchecked, check them back.

WinPatrol

Developed by Bill Pytlovany from BillP Studios, WinPatrol is a highly effective tool which can monitor your computer for any changes that could be initiated without your permission. It can manage scheduled tasks, review hidden files, watch over services and processes that run in the background and automatically report whenever something is about to happen. This way you will have full control over your computer. It is a great addition to your primary security software application.

It also offers a detailed startup management capability with explanations for each entry. If you are in doubt whether to disable an entry or not, the program will let you know exactly what it is and what it does.

The tool is free, but you can purchase the Plus version for a one time payment of $29.95. More than 20 languages are supported. The Plus version is faster and includes lifetime future updates.

WinPatrol is an extremely useful utility and it should be a must have application for everyone concerned about their safety as well as computer performance.
